Taking Action Toward Your Goals

Have you ever heard of behavior change? It’s an interesting idea that came about in the 1970s when researchers studied how people, could successfully make lasting changes in their lives. They discovered that we all go through “5 Mindset Stages” when trying to make a big change.

Let’s break it down simply:

  • Precontemplation: People don’t see a problem with their behavior and aren’t thinking about changing.
  • Contemplation: They start to recognise the problem and think about the pros and cons of making a change.
  • Preparation: They make a plan and get ready to change soon, gathering information and resources.
  • Action: They take steps to change their behavior, putting their plan into motion.
  • Maintenance: They keep up the new behavior, working to make it a lasting habit and avoid falling back into old habits.

From Planning to Action

Changing your lifestyle and taking steps towards your goals are like learning to ride a bike. At first, you might not even think about biking (precontemplation). Then, you see people riding bikes and think it looks fun (contemplation). You get a bike and start planning when and where to ride (preparation). You start pedaling and might wobble a bit, but you’re riding (action). Over time, you get better and it becomes second nature (maintenance).

Moving from Planning to Action is a big step. It’s easy to get stuck in planning, like searching for the best bike and reading about biking for hours. But remember: you won’t enjoy biking until you start pedaling.

With so much information online, you might spend hours looking for the “perfect” solution. But here’s a secret: taking that first step, even if it’s small, will get you closer to your goal than hours of planning ever will.

It’s the same for your health goals – the most important thing is to take action, even if it’s just booking a class today!

A 5-minute brisk walk will get you closer to your goal than 30 minutes of reading about the perfect diet. We’ve all been there, planning instead of doing.

It’s about taking imperfect action. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Even a small step in the right direction helps you reach your goals faster.

If any of this sounds familiar, try a little experiment today. Go for a walk, sign up for a fitness class, or choose an apple over a slice of cake. Remember, it’s all about progress, not perfection. The key is to start moving forward.

Imagine this: Today could be the day you take that step towards a healthier, happier you. Picture yourself feeling energised and proud. Think about the joy of making a positive change. It all starts with one simple action.

If you’ve been thinking about joining an exercise class but haven’t made the leap, make today the day! Trying something new can be scary. My students tell me that all the time. But they’re just like you. The only difference is they took action and booked a class.

So, why wait any longer? Take that first step. You deserve to feel amazing and achieve your goals. Book one of my exercise classes today. Let’s go on this journey together. I’m here to support you every step of the way.
